Common Flange Facing Types and Their Applications

Flange facing plays an important role in sealing performance and pipeline safety. Different flange faces are designed to meet various pressure, temperature, and service conditions in industrial piping systems. The most commonly used flange faces are Raised Face (RF), Flat Face (FF), and Ring Type Joint (RTJ).

Raised Face flanges are widely used in oil, gas, and chemical industries. The raised sealing surface helps concentrate pressure on the gasket, providing reliable sealing performance for medium and high-pressure applications. Flat Face flanges, on the other hand, have a smooth and even surface. They are mainly used for low-pressure systems and are often connected to cast iron equipment to avoid cracking caused by excessive bolt force.

Ring Type Joint flanges are specially designed for high-pressure and high-temperature services. They use a metal ring gasket to achieve excellent sealing performance and are commonly found in refineries, offshore platforms, and petrochemical plants.

Selecting the correct flange face is essential for preventing leakage, improving operational safety, and ensuring long-term pipeline reliability. The choice should be based on working pressure, temperature, medium, and installation requirements.
